Movie Review: Brave

Merida is the daughter of the king and queen -- therefore making her princess of the kingdom. But Merida and her mother, Elinor, have very different ideas of how a princess should behave. When Elinor arranges a competition between three clans for the firstborn to win Merida's hand in marriage, Merida grows angry and rebells against her parents' wishes. Desperate to change her mother, she runs away and unleashes a curse that could change everything.

This movie was so awesome!! The storyline was well thought out and well presented. One thing I liked about Merida: she was flawed. The rest of the Disney princesses never had a hair out of place and were always singing and weren't really flawed. Well, all of Merida's hairs are out of place, and she struggles with her pride. Both she and Elinor struggle with pride and with their relationship with each other.

That brings me to the second good (and slightly bad) point: Merida and Elinor's relationship. Merida was kind of disrespectful towards Elinor at first, but that was because she felt restricted, confined, and felt like Elinor wouldn't listen to her. And because Elinor herself was very strict, always saying things like "Merida, no weapons on the table" or "Don't slouch, Merida". Always correcting, never praising.

I love, though, how their relationship was resolved. Both realized that what they were doing was wrong and agreed to forgive each other, through mysterious circumstances that involve Merida's poor choices. And that brings me to Bad Points.

Okay. Well, there was some sorcery. Or magic. Not quite sure which one. The witch who cast the spell to change Merida's fate was not harmful as a person. She almost seemed like she wanted to stop what she was doing -- almost like a drug addict who wants to stop but can't. She tried to warn Merida against using magic to solve her problems, but Merida refused to listen. In the end, though, one of the morals is don't use magic or witchcraft to solve your problems, because it always ends in chaos.

Then, believe it or not, there was some scenes with naked ... naked behinds. Seriously. That really wasn't necessary. One part was supposed to be funny, but it was just weird.

Then there's the creep factor. This was the most intense Disney/Pixar movie they've ever put out in my opinion. There were no whimsical songs and, believe it or not, no Prince Charming. This movie was all about resolving Merida and Elinor's relationship (which I appreciate) but still, it was really, really intense.

This movie had no language in it whatsoever (yay!) and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It was amazingly awesome. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars, one star taken away for that weird naked thing. (Ewww.) Because of the creepiness, I think kids 10 and under shouldn't see it. It was so sad, sitting in the theater, and hearing three-year old kids crying! :(

But, anyway, I totally recommend this movie. It was great, with good morals and an awesome storyline. It's definitely different from any other princess movie Disney has done. (If you can even treat Brave as a princess movie!) So, go see it! Like, right now! :)

Oh, and guess what? The voice of Merida is the lady who played Rowena Ravenclaw in HP & the DH!

And here's my top 10 for the day, day 6 -- top 10 fav foods.
